Tracy Wells is a Couture Milliner based out of her showroom and workshop at The Hat Box in Barrow-in-Furness. Tracy’s hats and designs were previously photographed by Mike Kells also of Barrow and between them made a great team, sadly Mike passed away in late 2013, I didn’t know Mike personally but he was clearly very, very well thought of and I am sorry we never got to meet.
I have known Tracy for many years and some words stick firmly in my mind ‘big boots to fill lad’ she said, referring to the excellent work Mike had done previously for Tracy, so over to me, we are a couple of shoots in now and hats really do take a bit of ‘getting your head around’ when it comes to showing them off, a very fine balance from all concerned from model, to hair, to make-up, outfits and from my point of view how to light them so that the hat or fascinator is the prime subject but the whole package looks the business!
Quite a departure from my usual ‘environmental’ portraiture but great to get thinking, pretty sure if we get some good weather we will utilise ‘outside’ for some of the next shoots we have planned!
Suffice to say we always have a laugh, hopefully get Rachy dragged in to model at some point as well. If you are in the market for a beautiful, bespoke hat or fascinator do get in touch, Tracy’s hats are also available locally at Davenports in Grange and Kendal, The Exchange in Kendal and Lancaster and branches of ShuShu.
It was also great to see Boy George tweet a ‘selfie’ wearing one of Tracy’s hats recently, now, if we can get him to Cumbria I would be happy to photograph him!
