Windermere Air Festival – a different perspective.

Having been a fan of the Windermere Air Show for a long time I would be missing the re-named show this year due to other commitments, it is now called the Windermere Air Festival.

I was still in the area though, so was able to hatch a cunning plan for a slightly different approach of photographing it. Both days I had other photography jobs going on but would be in a position to possibly photograph the ‘Main’ events if the weather played ball.

As always I like to give myself a ‘brief’ and on the Saturday my own brief was to capture the Delta wing silhouette of the Avro Vulcan XH588, whilst maintaining the beautiful vista of the English Lake District, pretty simple really and with a bit of thought I came up with the ideal location. Sunday’s brief was very similar, as Saturday had worked well I would return to the same place to capture the Red Arrows. I took Rachy with me and she was delighted to see the Red Arrows from a different perspective and of course the very romantic Heart in the sky 😉

I have photographed them both before and have many close up shots but I really did want something different, sadly on both days, although the weather was great there was a large amount of atmospheric haze, unfortunately this does somewhat hamper things at the distance I was photographing from, I have to say though it has made some really interesting light, I suspect that some of it was reflected back up from the Lake.

Overall, I feel I met my own brief and with that I give to you the Avro Vulcan XH588 and the Red Arrows. I have a different location earmarked for next years show, it will need a little more planning though 😉

For those not local the hills you see in the background from left to right are (roughly) The Old Man of Coniston, Swirl How, Wetherlam, Scafell, Crinkle Crags, Bow Fell, Great End, Great Gable, Black Crags, Pike of Stickle and High Raise. In the foreground is the Lyth Valley and Crosthwaite.

OK, back to it – normal Wedding service to resume, I hope you have enjoyed the last post with the motorbikes from Barbon Hill Climb and this post with the aeroplanes from the Windermere Air Show and a little bit of the Lake District landscape.

    Hi Ian

I have come across this post whilst trying to find the bet spot to catch the two Avro Lancaster flypast scheduled over Windermere in September.

Although not quite what i was after i love the shots you have achieved here, the red arrows palm split and top side of the Vulcan are fantastic.

    Well done!
